Scotch Doubles & Mixer

Two-player teams alternate shots. Mixer randomises the partnerships.

Scotch doubles

Two players form a side and alternate shots: partner A, then partner B, then A again, for as long as the side stays at the table. Any of the game rules (8, 9 or 10-ball) apply as normal.

  • The side decides who breaks before the match. The partner who did not break takes the next shot.
  • When the side regains the table, the partner who did not take the side's last shot plays next.
  • Shooting out of turn is a foul — the opponent receives cue ball in hand.
  • Partners may confer, but only the shooter may touch the cue ball when placing ball in hand.

Mixer

A Mixer is a tournament format in which individual players register and partnerships are drawn for the event. RingGame balances the pairs by rating: the strongest registered player is paired with the lowest-rated, the second strongest with the second lowest, and so on, and the pairs are then placed into a bracket. Pairs play scotch doubles. A Mixer needs an even number of players (at least four); pairings are shown on the tournament page once the field is drawn.

Teams (3+ players)

Team matches use fixed rosters. Team membership is locked while the team is entered in a tournament that is open, awaiting seeding or live, so rosters can't change mid-event.

How team matches are rated

For ranked team and doubles matches, each side's strength is the average rating of its players. Every player on the side receives a rating change computed from those averages and their own K-factor. See Rating methodology.
